Durban Dance Youth Awards 2016
Last night was incredible! Throughout the year, scouts have watched over 300 dance performances, of which 35 groups were nominated in last nights first Durban Dance Youth Awars.
Sugar Dance's hip hop crews, the Sugar Snapz, Shape Shifters and Xcentrix were nominated in the junior and senior categories and the dynamic Sugar Snapz tied with Dance Movement's Lil Monsters to bring home the trophy.
Organised by Jarryd Watson and held at the Jubilee Hall, the evening was a definite success. Always under funded and often under supported, dance in our province desperately needs a platform like this. From African contemporary, to Krump, to Jazz to Spanish...solos, duos and groups...we were treated to top class dance talent. Next year the awards will be held at the Playhouse and Sugar Dance will keep working hard and hold thumbs for 2017 nominations.
Thank you to all my dancers who left their hearts on the floor and performed like never before. Thank you to their parents for being their biggest supporters and allowing me to push them and get them involved in everything we do during the year. I know there are long days and weekends given up, but it's all worth it when their hard work pays off. I am very proud! Julie x
